Insurance billing for therapy can be confusing, and coverage varies significantly from plan to plan. We want you to have a clear picture of what to expect before
your first visit — so here's a plain-English breakdown of the most important terms.
Deductible - Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance begins covering services. Once you've met your deductible for the year, your plan starts sharing the cost. Important note for Medicare patients: Medicare's deductible resets every January 1st and the amount changes annually. This catches a lot of patients off guard early in the year — if you're on Medicare and see a balance in January or February, this is typically why. Our front desk team will always let you know where you stand before treatment begins.
Copay - A copay is a flat fee you pay at each visit, regardless of the total cost of the session. Not all plans have copays — it depends on your specific coverage.
Coinsurance - Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost you're responsible for after your deductible has been met. For example, if your plan has 20% coinsurance, your insurance pays 80% and you pay 20% per visit.
Prior Authorization - Some insurance plans require pre-approval before therapy can begin. If your plan requires it, we'll handle the prior authorization process on your behalf — just another reason to call us before your first visit so we can get the ball rolling.
Our recommendation:
Call us before your first appointment. Our front desk team will contact your insurance provider, verify your specific benefits, and walk you through exactly what to expect cost-wise. That way there are no surprises at the front desk.
